There are many stigmas that seriously overweight people face every day. But, one of the most interesting things we uncovered in development of this campaign, was the stigma against weight loss surgery. You’re damned for being overweight, and then damned for wanting to do something about it. It was time to draw the line against that kind of thinking. Diabetes doesn't care if you're black, white, rich, poor. It goes after everybody—including superstars like Patti LaBelle and Jose Feliciano. These 'heroes' of the diabetes community provided inspiration and cache to the launch of OneTouch® Ultra®2—a new blood glucose meter that helped with food choices. (A production highlight was when Jose broke into an impromptu "Feliz Navidad" for the cast and crew during a break in shooting.)
The challenge? Create a new Spectra shaver spot using the old Santa footage. The solution? Bring Santa into the 21st century with a musical makeover. We ended up creating 4 versions that featured different shaving-inspired lyrics—hip-hop, punk, country and rock—and rotated all of them throughout the holiday season.
A Capital One brief was a pure Hollywood-esque portrayal of an advertising job—big budgets, no limits, insane deadlines. We dreamed up spots that featured everything from rampaging dinosaurs, to runaway snowballs, and my personal favorite, the lifesize Mrs Butterworth bottle that terrorized a family at breakfast.
